A newly NIA-funded postdoctoral position for a recent Ph.D. is available immediately in the laboratory of Paul M. Mathews, Ph.D. at the NKI. This research position is part of a collaborative undertaking including Drs. Efrat Levy and Donald A Wilson, also at the NKI and NYU School of Medicine, investigating apolipoprotein E-allelic differences in the endosomal system in neurons. The goal of these studies is to understand cell biological responses to different apolipoprotein E alleles that either predispose to or protect neurons from neurodegenerative risk both early in AD as well as independently of hallmark AD pathology. Our studies examine vesicular trafficking and functional differences in the endosomal system mediated by apolipoprotein E employing multidisciplinary approaches including behavioral tests of mouse models, immunolabeling, standard biochemistry, as well as genomic, proteomic and lipidomic approaches applied to mouse brain tissue, human postmortem brain tissue, and in vitro cultured cells. Therapeutic strategies building upon the protective effects of apolipoprotein E2 are one of the long-term goals of this project.

  • These individuals will work closely with the P.I. performing experiments, analyzing data, and writing manuscripts
  • rodent husbandry including familiarity with standard behavioral assessments
  • mouse surgery
  • cell culture, primary neuronal cultures
  • tissue and cell immunolabeling for confocal microscopy
  • PCR, Western blot, subcellular fractionation
