                                                                       GENERAL MECHANIC


Location:           Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research

Salary/Grade:   SG 12/


Qualifications:   Four (4) years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis. Must possess and maintain a Valid New York State Drivers License.

Job Duties: Under the direction of the department supervisor the General Mechanic will be expected to perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled assignments, tasks and related maintenance. These include, but not limited to: 

  • Routine plumbing work, repairing and installing fixtures, piping, threading pipe, unplugging stoppages
  • Carpentry work, installing and repairing shelving, desks, file cabinets, doors, etc...
  • Assists in repairing and maintaining locks.
  • Routine repair and patching of drywall, priming, painting of interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Routine electrical work, maintaining lighting, outlets, switches and related fixtures. Installing circuits for equipment,
  • Grounds maintenance including Ice and Snow removal, by using snowplows, snow blowers, snow shovels and applying Ice melt/salt. Pulling weeds, picking up debris/garbage from grounds
  • Working knowledge of methods, material, tools and equipment used in the craft or crafts to which assigned.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment and material of the craft or crafts to which assigned.
  • Ability to plan and lay out work and diagnose problems.
  • Ability to lift and move office furniture/ heavy objects.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to resolve maintenance issues
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor
  • Ability to climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms
  • Must possess and maintain a Valid New York State Driver's License. 

Shift hours: 8:00AM- 4:30 PM M-F but available for other work shifts/hours as needed.

Lunch break 12:30 PM 1:00 PM
