The Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI) is seeking an experienced general mechanic for their Maintenance Department. The Maintenance Department at NKI is charged with supporting a complex research campus with unique maintenance requirements over and above normal, routine building services. The shift hours are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday Friday with some evening and/or weekend work required to meet deadlines, during emergencies, and for snow removal as needed during inclement weather. Reliable and regular attendance is expected.


Under the direction of the department supervisor, the general mechanic will perform a variety of skilled and semiskilled trades for the maintenance support of NKI's physical plant, utilities, equipment, and grounds. Specific duties to be performed may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Perform general plumbing maintenance work including repairing and installing fixtures, piping, threading pipe, and unplugging stoppages.
  • Perform a variety of general carpentry duties to include installing and repairing shelving, desks, file cabinets, doors, adjustment of hardware, and replacement of ceiling tile.
  • Assist in locksmith-related tasks including repair and maintenance of locks.
  • Routine repair and patching of drywall. Perform a variety of painting-related duties including preparing, priming, and painting of interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Perform routine electrical work to include maintaining lighting, outlets, switches, and related fixtures. Install circuits for equipment.
  • Assist with general upkeep and grounds maintenance activities including snow and ice removal during inclement weather, requiring the use of snowplows, snow blowers, snow shovels, and applying ice melt/salt.

Other requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Must possess the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
  • Must possess the ability to use the tools, machines, equipment and material of the trade or trades to which assigned.
  • Ability to plan and lay out work and diagnose problems.
  • Ability and willingness to perform moderate to heavy manual labor. Must be willing and able to perform physical tasks which involve lifting and moving heavy objects, walking, stooping, standing, pushing, pulling, climbing ladders, and working at heights on scaffolds and platforms.
  • Ability to work well independently.
  • Must have the ability to assess and resolve maintenance issues.


Four (4) years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled journey-level position, which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprentice training in a trade or training gained by completion of technical courses in a trade at a school or institute may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis. Must possess and maintain a valid New York State Driver's License.

Background Investigation/Justice Center Review Requirements:

Prospective appointees will be: 1) Checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment. 2) Screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR).  Prospective employees whose names are indicated on the SCR may be barred from appointment.
